Galaxy
comes from the Greek name for the galaxy we live in – and has its origins in
the Greek word milk. We don’t know. Every time astronomers look into the
Universe they discover more galaxies. Some parts of the Universe have not been
looked at yet, and there are other parts that telescope cannot see. The best
estimate by astronomers is that there are at least 125 billion galaxies out
there.
Ø
Galaxies are huge star system, made of stars and
large amounts of gas and dust.
Ø
They come in a range of sizes and shapes
consisting of millions, billions, or even trillion of stars.
Ø
Some, known as active galaxies, have unexpected
amounts of energy that come from star material falling into a black hole.
Ø
Other galaxies are transformed by galactic
collisions.
The galaxy we live in is the Milky Way Galaxy. Apart from it,
three galaxies are easily seen with the naked eye from Earth – Andromeda, the
Large Magellanic Cloud, and the small Magellanic Cloud.
